What is the Best Age for Newborn Photos? | Halifax Newborn Photographer

What is the best age for newborn photos?

As a Halifax Newborn Photographer, this is a question that I am commonly asked.

Spoiler alert! There is no right answer!

My style of photography is called ‘lifestyle’ meaning that we only do light poses and capture connection and real moments. There is no expectation that baby will be sleeping, no tight swaddling and only poses that would come natural to the baby.

A newborn session can take place as early as 48 hours after birth, up to 6 weeks old.

When you choose to schedule your newborn session is really up to you!

No matter when you have photos taken, they will be special and a cherished memory.

If you would like to document the early sleepy newborn stage of wrinkly hands and soft skin, I recommend scheduling your session by 2 weeks of age. If you prefer to have photos with the baby a little more awake and possibly interacting with the camera, 2-6 weeks is the perfect time.

It also depends on when you feel most comfortable with having a session in your home! Welcoming a new baby into your family is a big, exhausting event so while you may be ready to have photos done soon after the baby is born, many families need a bit of time to adjust before they feel camera ready.

Whenever you decide to have your newborn session, I work hard to ensure that you are comfortable and relaxed the entire time. It’s a privilege and honor to be invited into your home to document such an important time in your life, and I do not take that responsibility lightly!
